Peabody Essex Museum Reinstalls Notable Exhibit on Korean Art and Culture
The reinstalled Korean gallery of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts opened this spring after a 13-year closure. Its name, the Yu Kil-Chun Gallery of Korean Art and Culture, commemorates a young diplomat from the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) whose time in Salem from 1883 to 1884 resulted in its earliest Korean acquisitions, and this emphasis on the importance of interpersonal relationships to the collection’s formation unites the current display of about 100 objects.
